Low Waste Education
WFA works to inform and inspire the community about the importance of recycling, reuse, recirculation and repair. We do this through our newsletters, videos, tabling, and social media. We also collaborate with local businesses as grant partners to help spread the word about new reuse systems available in the community.
Check out the Facebook group: Oregon Waste Less and Recycle Right, initiated by WFA. Go there to ask your questions and also provide answers!
Food Waste Prevention
We're a proud partner in Food Waste Prevention Week!
This year, we celebrated at the PSU Farmers Market by offering tips and resources and displaying how much food the average Oregon family wastes - 327 lbs of food a year. We also dressed up like fruits and vegetables and made a video asking market-goers food waste trivia. Thank you to our partners: the City of Portland, Urban Gleaners, and Birch Community Services, and thank you to Oregon DEQ for sponsoring our event!
Oregon Reduces
Campaign
WFA aims to reduce single-use waste in its many forms, from coffee cups to food packaging to restaurant takeout. With Oregon’s recent health code update that allows restaurants and retailers to sell food in consumer-owned containers, WFA is leading the Oregon Reduces Campaign to educate and inspire restaurants and consumers to reduce waste through reuse. Volunteer with us to help reach as many Oregonians as we can! Please read more about that effort here.
Community Events
From our policy choices to our entrepreneurs, Oregon is one of the most progressive states in waste reduction. Part of WFA's mission is to connect the many different aspects of Oregon's waste reduction community. We host a yearly Celebration of Innovation where we highlight the people, organizations, government sectors, and businesses doing great work. Through events like the Conscious Coffee Fest and a learning opportunity with Revino, we also find ways to connect the community with people making changes in their industry.
